WiFi, Data Plans, Smartphones, and Dumb Phones
For feature phones, if you want to check your email, why do you need a data plan? Why not just put WiFi on the phone instead? This video discusses that concept in relation to smart phones, feature phones, and Verizon’s network & policies relating to services & devices.

the new mandatory data plan requirement for smartphones seems to be across the board on all the major carriers. that has fcc complaint written all over it. i used my old tilt for wi-fi all the time, as well as syncing data with my computer. i needed a new phone and found this new rule out, and now am stuck without a smartphone, as i refuse to cave in. their statement on why is ridiculous..to better catter to the customer and have a reliable and predictable bill…haaa what a joke
I cannot stand the mandatory data plan, I refuse to get a “smartphone”
That works, I’m just used to people insulting me, when they laugh.
Good one
WERE LAUGHING CUZ WE LIKE LAUGHING
non
Care to explain why you are laughing?
hahahaha
lol i had nothing to say
i get wat ur saying tho
Sir, or madam, why are you laughing?
hehehhehehe
ok basically order ur new phone offline(it cannot be in store) then when you recieve it call tech support on your old phone and say “Hey, look I got a smart phone in today that I ordered and I spoke with someone here prior to my order and they told me to call you guys when I get my new phone but do not use it until i call. The reason they told me to call before use is because I was told that I could have the phone without a data plan.” they should fall for it and tell you how to go about. did4me
@BLITZandKILL what do u mean by this? i want the verizon droid but i have to pay per month can u explain more how to do this and ill subscribe! Thnx man
there is a way to not pay for a data plan with a smartphone.. all u have to do is if they call and ask for an SSID number from your phone just deny to give it to them and they cannot add anything to your plan
I really like your videos . You’re very well spoken, and make all valid points, very clear and concise. I own an LG Lotus for Sprint, and I highly reccomend it.
verizon thinks they need more money….hmmm they have what 80 million customers! WHY THE HELL DO THEY NEED MORE MONEY! they piss me off…i was looking at the htc touch pro 2 for mainly txting and the big screen and it was somewhat affordable yet now verizon is making me pay 30 bux a month o_O wtf! screw verizon…..i wish i could leave verizon but my parents would not leave on a dime and i dont want to mess with the hassle….thx for screwing me over again verizon….
Until they make them cheap with or without contract and without adding any junk to the plan, I would never get a smartphone. Profit is the name of the game, not consumer choice.
The main reason that these carriers can give steep discounts on expensive smartphones while “requiring” a data plan (other than profit) is in order to be in contract for a 500 to 600 device, they have to throw in a 30 or so dollar a month data plan to help make you pay for the phone over time. Most of these “new feature phones” are in retail for 200 dollars or more. Yet to get them free, you don’t have to add anything to your plan to be under 2year contract. Price vs Choice vs Contract Freedom.
a simple answer to your simple Q:WHY?! A: THEY WANT MORE MONEY!!!! and they know we’re dumb and we’ll pay just to have a shiny new limited feature piece of shit!
I completely agree! I currently own an unlocked Blackberry Bold 9000. The device has built in Wireless a/b/g functionality. I have a family plan through T-Mobile that costs me $150 a month and I can’t find a logical reason to add another $40 a month for a data plan. I have internet access wherever I am, and I should have the right to choose. Unfortunately, even with wifi, the Bold is handicap without a data plan since many of its applications require WAP access. It’s all about the money.
Great video! I’m a huge fan… You’re the reason why I live! Such good help… Wanna get together? We can talk tech… Message me sometime
I know Rogers and Fido (GSM) both lock you in a data plan, tho fido’s is $30-45/month with it using the blackberry on a 3 year service and also 3 year data agreement.
Telus and bell/solomobile (not all too sure yet, both being CDMA, same with Koodo) do the same also, lock you in a data plan regardless if you got wifi or not. Not sure about CDMA koodo mobile.
All are Canadian cell phone carriers.
they have data plans because most people are not in wifi all the time and the MAINSTREAM audience would rather just click and view email than search and get wifi. its simply just that people arent like us and do not really care that much about their phones to analyze their features. why would they offer the option to buy the data plan? thats bad business, dont give the consumer a choice and force them to buy. therefore they get money because people will and people always have been paying.
This is very true. I did hear that email on FEATURE phones is $5/month or something plus the Family Select plan gives you unlimited messaging for an additional $20 or so, so I’m going to look into that when my contract expires.
Don’t fall for verizon’s “wireless data plan”. My Neice (had) Alltel’s UNLIMITED data plan (which was as slow as bad dial-up). Now that Verizon owns Alltel – she gets 5 gigs per month. That’s nothing if you do anything online. Besides, why do you want wi-fi on a cell phone. Just get a nice netbook. It’s a better screen, more functionality, and they ALL have wifi.
